My condolences to the family of the man who brought me into this world and who fought so hard to save my life at its very beginning. Without Dr Baugh, I would have died on that cold icy January night! Thank you for sharing his life with his patients!

Dr. Baugh was a great man who healed with skill, laughter and compassion. He took care of a young Tippens family for all the years we lived in Lunenburg County and Kenbridge. He was the man who provided the medicine and healthcare for both our children as they moved through school. Fortunately/unfortunately (we could have laughed about it) we moved away before we became senile. God bless the Baugh family and the Lunenburg County/Kenbridge communities. A great man has passed.

I am sorry to hear of Dan's passing. There are many fond memories of Dan, from my childhood through adult life. He always had advice to give, whether it be medical, personal, or for life. Dan could keep a person in "stitches" with his comments. He did love fishing. And most of all, he did love his family.

Janie, Ann Carter, Danny and Johnny, Truly one of the best people on earth has left us! He was caring, compassionate, smart and a great healer. Each time I went into his office feeling like death I came out laughing and feeling better, he just had that effect on everyone. I still smile everytime I think about the Sunday I sent Jeff down to the office complaining with his finger hurting and he came back with a cast on and he never let me forget that! We did love him and he was right, he was truly our "country doctor". God Bless and Keep Each of you!

What a wonderful example of a country doctor who modeled his life after The Great Physician! He mentored me in my early years and though I took another path away from Family Practice, I learned much from him that has greatly helped my Radiation Oncology practice. He once jokingly told my parents that I must have a brain abscess since I preferred "shots" over pills. He knew that humour is the best medicine. My sincere condolences to his family. We have lost a great man, but Heaven rejoices!!

Janie, Sorry for your loss. I loved your dad so much. He was always there for us when we needed him. He made going to the Doctor a lot of fun. He and my mom were friends in their younger days in Lawrenceville. Sending you hugs. Great getting back in touch with you after so many years. Eugene and I both send our prayers for you and your family. Anything we can do, please let me know.

My family was blessed to have Dr. Baugh as our family doctor for five generations. He imprinted our lives in so many ways. His gentle care, advice, encouragement, and his smiling humor will live on in our hearts and his legacy will be in our memories forever. Children, you are the most important part of his Legacy-please write a book about his life as a Country Doctor. I'm sure you have heard so many stories about his adventures. I pray that The Lord surrounds you with HIS peace and that HE blesses you for sharing your father with so many.

God bless and comfort you in the loss of such a wonderful person, doctor and friend. He was sorely missed when he retired, and cannot be replaced. He took care of my family for most of those 50 years he practiced here in Kenbridge. When I think of him, I think of him smiling and saying something to make you laugh. I know you all have wonderful memories and may those precious memories sustain you in the days ahead.

Dr. Baugh was a man for all seasons. He shared his medical knowledge with me, helped me understand that we were treating people and not diseases. He was practical about life. He knew how to be honest with patients in the way they could accept. I considered him a mentor and a friend, when I came to Southside Virginia. My life was better because I knew him.

BAUGH,
Dr. Emerson Daniel Baugh, Jr. was born in Lawrenceville, Va. July 2, 1929 the son of the late Judge Emerson Daniel Baugh and Maggie Lee Matthews Baugh. He attended Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, graduated from The University of Virginia School of Medicine and interned at the Medical College of Virginia (now V.C.U. School of Medicine.) He began his solo practice of medicine in Kenbridge, Virginia where he opened his office and his heart to the community in 1955. He practiced here for nearly 50 years. During that time he treated snakebites, set broken bones, and repaired open wounds, while treating the spectrum of diseases and infirmities of all ages. He said that he followed patients through infancy, adulthood, and senility. House calls were the norm, and for many years he delivered babies in his office and homes. He delivered one baby on the ground in the patient’s yard and twice in the back seat of a car. Early on, he was the local dentist’s leading advocate and supporter in getting fluoride introduced to the Kenbridge water supply…a controversial concept in its day. Dr. Baugh served on the Board of Directors of Lunenburg Health Service since 1956, an organization dedicated to providing free, supportive, compassionate nursing care to people in need in Lunenburg County. He and his wife Helen Jane opened their home for many years , two weeks at a time, to medical students contemplating the family physician way of life in a rural community. He was honored when asked to participate in this part of a med students education. He shared his calling with the students willingly, and enjoyed it thoroughly. He was a Charter Fellow and Life Member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a four time Diplomate to the American Board of Family Practice. He held many offices with the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians including Office of President, and was chosen the V.A.F.P. Family Physician of the year in 1998. While he considered this to be the highest professional honor of his life, he never claimed to be anything but “a country doctor,” the title he preferred. This was his deeply satisfying and profoundly meaningful life’s work. Dr Baugh is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Helen Jane Beckelheimer Baugh of Fayetteville, West Virginia, and his brother Judge Arthur Matthews Baugh (Pete) of Richmond, Virginia. He is survived by his four children, Jane Osborne Baugh Singletary (Bruce Love), Ann Carter Baugh Watts (Ed), Emerson Daniel Baugh, III (Cornelia), and John Matthews Baugh (Robin) and his grandchildren, in Virginia and North Carolina.

Dr. Dan loved the outdoors: the land, the woods and ponds of Southside Virginia, and the wildlife residing there. He loved fishing and hunting in all of these places with his boys and his friends whenever he could. He was a deep thinker with a sweet soul and a wonderful sense of humor. He gave generously to every charity that asked and many that did not. He spoke gently, he looked out for those less fortunate, especially children and the elderly, he laughed often, made others laugh, and he worked tirelessly, always putting the needs of others before his own. His dedication to his patients and his family and his community endeared him to multiple generations in Lunenburg.

Dr. Dan slipped away from us in the early morning of May 9, 2017 into a final sleep. It was time, and he needed the rest. Visitation with the family will be at Clarke Funeral Home, 110 E. Fifth Avenue, Kenbridge, Va. Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at the Kenbridge United Methodist Church, 201 E. Fifth Avenue, Kenbridge, Va. on Friday May 12th at 2:00 PM  with burial at Kenbridge Heights Cemetery.  Refreshments following at the Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt “Thanks” to all of  Dr. Dan’s extraordinary and loving caregivers, Most especially Gloria Jean Wilson and Deborah Craven. In lieu of flowers Dr. Dan would be honored to have a donation sent to any of the following. The Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Plantation, Brookneal, Va. 24528, Lunenburg Health Service P.O.
