James was 1 of my most influential Mentors during my rookie police officer years @ Kenbridge PD in the early 90's. He taught me alot and backed me up many times when no one else was close. He litterally saved me from potentially being injured on 1 arrest of a violent drug addict. I looked up to him on personal and professional advice and he always gave it to me straight weather I liked it or not! On late shifts I would call 994 and he would always take time to stop and have coffee. He was my friend, my mentor and I considered him a War Hero even tho he rarely spoke about his Vietnam Combat experience. He was truly one of the Finest Americans!

Jason, My heart hurts for you and your family. Your Dad was truly one of a kind! He gave me the only ticket I ever got! I respected him and enjoyed listening to stories on midnight shifts when I was a dispatcher in South Hill. Heaven gained a good one! Penny

James was one of the first Troopers I met as a young rookie officer on the Chase City police department. He was always professional and carried himself with stregth, character and dignity. I was very honored to know him ans spend time with him. A true testament to him is his son Jason who I went through police academy with and consider a good friend and great police officer and Christian just like his father. James will truly be missed, but what a legacy he has left. Rest easy Trooper, your work is done and the suffering is over. Sincerely, Shane Johnson
